Honeymoon destinations

Valentine's Day is filled with happy memories; if you are like me, this is a day you will not soon forget. Each year when February 14th rolls along, I drag out photos from 8 years ago when I was asked, "Will you marry me?"

Congratulations on your engagement and for a memorable Valentine's Day! Putting the task of wedding planning aside, let's talk honeymoon destinations! Traditionally it is the groom who plans and pays for the honeymoon, leaving it as a surprise to the bride. However, more and more couples are enjoying the planning and booking together.

As you plan, whether as a couple or not, here are a few things to consider:

  • Give one another input. Express your concerns or wishes from the beginning.
  • Remember that your honeymoon is an extension of your celebration of your commitment to one another. In the whirlwind of your wedding festivities, you may become distracted with making sure things go well or connecting with your guests. Your honeymoon should be a time to relax, renew, and relish in one another.
  • Don't feel pressure to go on your honeymoon immediately after your wedding. Due to schedules, finances, or just plain lack of energy after a wedding, you may want to consider booking a smaller "getaway" and saving the honeymoon for a later time...although not too much later because it then becomes more likely to postpone.
  • Communicate your thoughts on communication...with family and friends. In today's technological age, it is common to update your friends and family about each significant moment. However, it also can get in the way of enjoying the moment. Discuss with your partner how much you want to integrate communication with friends and family while on your honeymoon
Whether you book a trip to the beach, mountains, or on a cruise, start your marriage out focusing on healthy communication, self-care, and enjoying your new journey together.
