Define Success. Then redefine it.

How do you define success? At first glance, the question looks simple enough; however, once you start pondering it, the answer begins to lose its clarity. Success has different meanings for different people.

I hear many people say that they would like to be successful in life. In fact, I say, "I want to be successful in life." There aren't many who would not want to be successful in or at something. Right?

What makes you successful? For example, is success being a home owner, having a stable and committed relationship, or having a profitable career? To many people, they would say that those things would make a successful life. I'm not arguing with one's definition of success by any means, like I mentioned it differs person to person. However, I would like to add a twist in thought.

Could you still be "successful" if instead of owning a house, you at least paid your rent on time? Instead of having a stable and committed relationship, you at least felt heard by your partner. Instead of having a profitable career, you at least had a job. The point I'm making is that "success" can be redefined.

At times we visualize success as being something to strive for and it has the potential to put us on a trajectory of feeling frustration and inadequacy if we don't measure up in a set time frame. However, what if you redefined "success" for yourself? What a beautiful thought! Redefine success in ways that allows you to feel accomplishment, value, and appreciation for what you have done already. For instance, I thought success for this blog would be a daily or weekly entry (like so many blogs are). Redefining a successful blog is creating at least one entry a month. I am doing it so far!

Success. Redefine it...what are you waiting for?
